With the gaming market trending very quickly to HD audio and visuals, we find ourselves in need of a lot more equipment to get the most out of our games.  I myself have purchased HD TVs, surround sound systems/headphones, PC gaming rigs, and video game systems all to take advantage of the higher resolution and clarity offered with cutting-edge technology.  Well, even if you have all of the fancy gadgets, you’re still going to need a ton of cables to hook everything together.  With all of the cables to buy, it’s best if you can get them on the cheap, as long as it doesn’t risk reducing the all-mighty clarity that your system will produce in the end.  We recently had a budget-priced HDMI cable (that of course works on all HDMI-compatible devices) sent to us for review, so read on to see how it fared.

HDMI is the high-definition cable of choice for pretty much everything these days.  What’s particularly nice about HDMI is that it does both surround sound and full HD video in one convenient little package.  For audio I still usually run an optical cable to my surround sound decoder, but for the purpose of reviewing this cable I used its audio capabilities.

Physical quality-wise the cable is very solid.  The connectors are gold-plated and the ends are made of a solid, non-cheap-feeling plastic.  The cable itself is also fairly thick, so there’s no worries about accidentally crimping it.  Usagi would probably take a little longer than normal to chew through them, so you could probably save it before it was too late.

I tested this HDMI cable with an Xbox 360 Elite, an original PS3, a slim PS3, and a 1080p upconverting DVD player as well as two different HDTVs.  Both the HDTVs and the players had no problem in recognizing and using the cable.  I compared the signal-quality of this HDMI cable with a $30 Dynex cable of the same length.  I’m happy to say that for gaming and watching Blurays/DVDs that there is absolutely no signal-quality difference between the two cables!

There has been a push recently against over-priced cables that essentially claim to make electricity/light go faster than is physically possible.  This comparison just serves to prove that when you’re looking for HD cables of any kind, price and length are much more of a deciding factor than purported “quality improvements”.
