Developer: Game Freak
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Role-Playing
Players: 1 (campaign), 2 (additional features)
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Hours Played: 42 hours
Progress: Completed main quest and post-quest activities

Nintendo and developer Game Freak continue the tradition of remaking older Pokémon games immediately following each new generation on the latest Nintendo handheld console.  On the heels of the success of the 6th generation of Pokémon titled X and Y, developer Game Freak re-used the same mechanics and advanced 3D graphics engine to remake Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, now called Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (ORAS). These remakes are faithful and nostalgic renditions that bring back positive memories, while applying all of the new mechanics introduced in the years since the originals were released. The beautiful and diverse region of Hoenn beckons once more, read on to see if it is worth the journey.

fantasy-life-3ds

Developer: Level-5
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: RPG
Players: 1-3 locally (multi-card)
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Hours Played: 50+ hours
Progress: Played 6 of the available 12 lives and reached Level 43

Fantasy Life originally seemed to be a combination of all the other turn based RPGs that I have played in the last number of years.  While this may be true, the game exemplifies itself in a new refreshing way.  This review is the result of approximately 50 hours of game play slogging along in half of the various lives Fantasy Life has to offer.

Smash Bros. 3DS Tournament in 60fps

Saturday, November 15th, 2014

We had our annual Smash Bros. tournament recently and as ever it was a great show.  We worked out a better way to record the commentary, so it will be a lot more readily audible than our slightly cacophonous coverage from last year.  Will Logan or Chris emerge victorious?  Hahahaha…. no.  See after the jump for a version without commentary (still in 60fps if you watch it at 720p in Chrome) if you have an aversion to our lovely voices and witty repartee.

mewtwo-smash-bros-wiiu

Nintendo blew the lid off of many of the new features coming for Smash Bros on the Wii U today, but the greatest news of all is that Mewtwo is returning to beat the pants off of Lucario’s cloned butt.

Other highlights include 8-Player Smash, Ridley as an interactive stage boss (proponents of him being playable can finally shut their mouths), the return of custom stages, and Smash Tour that combines many of the funky custom rules matches with board/party game elements.  You can see the full awesome press release after the jump!

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS Review

smash-bros-3ds

Developer: Sora Ltd.
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Fighting
Players: 1-4 locally (multi-card), 1-4 online
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Hours Played: ~30 hours
Progress: Unlocked all characters and stages, played Smash Run a few times, played about an hour of online multiplayer matches, finished about 3/4 of the second page of challenges

Super Smash Brothers is hands-down my favourite series of video games. Excellent, approachable mechanics and just the right blend of skill, fun and competition are hallmarks of each game in the series. The sound foundation of its gameplay coupled with the mind-blowing awesomeness of having all of your favourite Nintendo characters together in a single game make each new game release an unparalleled event in the worldwide video gaming community. The prospect of being able to take the latest version of Smash Bros. around with you was equal parts exciting and terrifying when the 3DS/Wii U version pair was announced — you’d be able to take one of the very best party games on the go with you, but would the proposed character parity between the versions hold the Wii U back from reaching its full potential? It turns out that both of these feelings were justified to some degree, so does the first portable Smash Bros. game live up to its series illustrious reputation or does it tarnish Smash Bros.’ once pristine name and foreshadow problems with this year’s Wii U release? Read on to find out how smashing our time with the game has been.

Unbelievably HUGE Nintendo Announcements

Friday, August 29th, 2014

new3dsImagine that Nintendo called you up at home and asked you to design a new version of the 3DS for them.  What would you put in it?  A second circle pad, probably, and what else?  Well, the sweet spot for the 3D is so low that most people don’t bother using it anymore — so why not add a better 3D screen, or even something super high-tech like face tracking so the 3D could adjust to your viewing angle?  You’ve been given carte blanche after all, so why not go totally crazy and add some extra cool things like a faster CPU so it can play better games (current 3DS owners be damned, this is the future so get on board the future train!) and a microSD card slot like illegitimate devices for the DS/3DS have had for around a decade now?  (You’d probably want better cameras and screen resolution too, but let’s take our victories one at a time).

Well guess what.  In just a couple months Nintendo is launching a fully improved 3DS and 3DS XL line dubbed the “new 3DS” and “new 3DS XL” in Japan (NA release dates haven’t been confirmed yet, but Europe has to wait until 2015) that have most of the features I just described:

  • Secondary C-stick which can indeed be used for smash attacks in Smash Bros.
  • Face-tracking using gyroscope and camera for 3D
  • Option for automatic brightness adjustment of screens
  • Faster CPU and games that exclusively use it like an upcoming port of Xenoblade Chronicles
  • NFC functionality on the lower screen for amiibo compatibility
  • MicroSD card slot under the system’s back panel to expand internal memory
  • ZR/ZL buttons on the top of the system
  • (non-Xl model only) Interchangeable face plates for the top/bottom of system

There’s tell that they might not be available in North America until 2015 just like in Europe, which would make the wait excruciating indeed.

Other mind-blowing news included the announcement of Shulk as a playable character in Smash Bros., further confirming all of the leaked rosters, etc. that came out earlier this week, so we can at least expect Duck Hunt, Dr. Mario, Ness, and Bowser Jr. too.

An upcoming firmware update for the 3DS in October will also allow for the purchase of custom menu themes:

Lucina, Robin, and Captain Falcon Confirmed for Smash Bros.

Monday, July 14th, 2014

Nintendo confirmed three more playable characters for inclusion in Smash Bros. today.  Fire Emblem fans will be ecstatic as two more of their favourite characters have been added: Lucina and Robin. I know literally nothing about Fire Emblem so I can’t attest to how good this news is. For the rest of us, Captain Falcon is confirmed to return and FALCON PAWNCH everyone into submission.

What’s more, this instantly un-confirms the most famous list of leaked Smash Bros. characters as Chrom, that it had purportedly confirmed, as been confirmed as non-playable in this new trailer. So, there’s hope for a genuine surprise or two left in the Smash Bros. roster and excited speculation can once again resume regarding what treats Sakurai has left for us in his magical bag.

You can check out the artwork for the individual characters and see a bunch more screenshots of them in action here.
