Casino Games for Nintendo Systems

Friday, March 8th, 2013

If you are looking for some great casino games for your Wii or NDS, these are a few that come highly recommended:

One of the top Nintendo DS poker games is High Stakes Texas Hold’em. This is a great game if you are a reasonably good poker player or if you are just learning how to play the game, as the game structure is easy to get your head around. In the single player mode you pit your skill and your luck against three computer opponents. In the multiplayer mode you can simply connect with up to three other human players.  You choose the size of the blind, your bankroll, and then simply play. There are some excellent 3D animations and you can quickly refer to a chart that shows you the value of each kind of hand — particularly useful if you are a novice player. The game would be improved if it had an online option, but it is a great way for a few friends to learn the finer points of the game together.

Pokémon Black/White Version 2 (Nintendo DS)

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

Genre: Handheld RPG
Players: 1 (2 online)
Console: Nintendo DS
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)

Hello Carl. I, too, am Carl. And this is my son: Carl Jr. We are all Carls. Neat. Yes, neat. With that said, I am here to talk to you about my experience playing the copy of Pokémon White 2 which Nintendo was kind enough to send our way a week early.  Over the course of my playthrough, I found what we all should expect to find: this game is a Pokémon game.  No groundbreaking surprises or changes to be found. It is certainly an improvement over the original White, but… it’s Pokémon. I’ll go over whatever might deserve a mention, and I’ll try to keep in mind a hypothetical human who has never played Pokémon and has some hypothetical reason to finally consider doing so.

I should also warn that many of the points I make will apply to both Pokémon White (& Black) Version 2 and Pokémon White (& Black) and even sometimes to every Pokémon game since the very beginning. It is not only because is it a bit difficult to extract Pokémon White Version 2 and look at it by its absolute self, but many of the problems with Pokémon White Version 2 are based in the fact that it is a part of a never-ending, never-changing series of games.

A Nice Surprise From Nintendo

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

I awoke today to the sound of my doorbell and to my surprise I received a very special package from the unusually perky Fed-Ex lady!  We’ll have a review up for Pokemon White Version 2 a little closer to its launch, but if you have any burning questions about it we’ll be able to provide you with some answers in the comments section.  Needless to say, the packaging is already pretty fancy!

My esteemed colleague ShinyVictini recently posted an article of 5 Reasons You Should Look Forward to Pokemon Black/White 2.  In the interest of both offering a balanced viewpoint on the upcoming Pokemon games and sharing my own views on the upcoming Pokemon sequels, I present you with 5 reasons not to look forward to Pokemon Black/White 2.  I, of course, invite you to peruse both of our articles and form your own opinion on the matter, but here’s why I’m not excited for yet another DS iteration of Pokemon:

5 Reasons You Should Look Forward to Pokemon Black/White 2

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

It’s official, Pokemon Black and White 2 will be hitting the shelves in North America on October 7th, 2012.  If you’re a Pokemon fanatic, you should easily be all manner of excited for this upcoming hot release.  If you’re only a casual Pokemon gamer however, or if you have fallen out of favour with the core Pokemon series games over the last few years, then this article is for you.  Make no mistake, these upcoming titles will be the most technically accomplished, most feature-filled, best connected, and all-round most fulfilling Pokemon experience ever to grace a Nintendo handheld.  As I’ve pointed out in a previous article, the first Black/White games raised the bar in terms of what the series can deliver.  The developer Game Freak has spent an additional year fine-tuning and expanding their product, and will no doubt raise the bar yet again.  While some people will bitterly complain that they could have been spending that time on more important projects (like 6th Gen Pokemon for 3DS, harumph!), they instead chose to milk a little more out of the geriatric Nintendo DS.  Regardless, if you’re not interested in either of these upcoming titles, you should be, and I’ll tell you why.

Nintendo Drops Prices for the DSi Line

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Nintendo announced today that they’re dropping the North American prices for the DSi lineup of systems.  Starting on May 20th, the DSi will cost only $99.99 and the DSi XL will be $129.99.  I, like many, had been waiting for Nintendo to do this for a while, because the 3DS’ rock-bottom price was kind of confusing when compared to the similar prices of its predecessors.  So, come May 20th all will be right in the world of Nintendo portable system pricing, with the older systems a decent amount less expensive than the new shiny one.

For the record, in our humble opinion the DSi XL still represents the best way to play DS games of the systems that are currently available.  There’s nothing wrong with playing DS games on the 3DS, but the huge, luxurious screens and wicked-long battery life offered by the DSi XL is simply unparalleled in the portable market.  So, if you’re looking for something to play Pokemon Black/White Version 2 on, and are not terribly interested in the 3DS apps that Nintendo’s offering to enhance the the experience on the 3DS, then look no further than the soon-to-be-reduced DSi XL.

Top 10 Things Nintendo Should Do For 3DS Pokemon Games

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

The Pokemon Company and developer Game Freak have recently announced the upcoming Pokemon Black and White Version 2 games on Nintendo DS.  They follow the very successful Pokemon Black and White titles, which are the 5th generation of the core Pokemon RPG series.  As a dedicated fan of this series, I would surmise that these new titles are meant to satisfy our cravings while we wait patiently for the inevitable announcement of the next generation of the series on the Nintendo 3DS.  It is strange that Nintendo didn’t force them to develop for the previously struggling 3DS with a pair of titles guaranteed to sell gazillions.  Some people are rightfully disappointed that the next pair of core titles will be released on hardware less powerful than a modern graphing calculator, but as a fan I’ll play almost anything developed by Game Freak, as they consistently produce fun and addictive titles that always raise the bar in the series.

Like it or lump it, we’re going to have to wait a while longer for Pokemon Gen. 6 on 3DS.  Pokemon Black/White was an admission by Game Freak that their fans have grown up, and while these games did so many things right they didn’t take them quite far enough.  Now that the much more powerful 3DS is here, Game Freak has a huge opportunity to take Pokemon to the next level.

To get them started, I present here for the developers my top 10 suggestions of features and improvements that fans will expect to see in Pokemon Gen. 6:
