Release Dates and More

No, what you’re looking at above is not a bad Photoshop.  Look at a calendar, it’s not April 1st either.  Nintendo today really, honestly announced the Nintendo 2DS — a $130 version of the 3DS with original 3DS-sized screens that sports most 3DS features with the exception of 3D and closing capabilities.  So, while it’s no longer really pocket-sized, Nintendo is aiming squarely at the smaller children crowd with their latest 3DS iteration, but if the Internet is to be believed this random and surprising console will likely go the way of the GBA micro and Wii mini to rest in the halls of Nintendo’s more ill-advised console refreshes.  If you happen to want one for some reason they hit stores on Oct. 12th in North America.

In other news, the PlayStation 4 that is looking better every day received the honour of a release date (but not a release game line-up list unfortunately).  The PS4 will officially hit NA stores on November 15th for $399.99, we’ll let you know should any more info arise regarding what games will be available at that time.

The Wii U had some news today as well.  Firstly, a price-cut bringing it down to $299.99 for the Deluxe model starting on Sept. 20th.  Some details about Wind Waker HD were also released including a limited edition Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle (comes with a digital copy of Hyrule Historia and an eShop code for Wind Waker) launching Sept. 20th also priced at $299.99 and the disc version of Wind Waker HD will be available in stores for $49.99 starting Oct. 4th.  A special edition of the disc version of Wind Waker HD will also be available exlusively at GameStop/EB Games that includes an impressive Ganondorf figurine for a mere $5 extra at $54.99.

Finally, updates have been sparse lately and we apologize for that.  Rest assured we’re busy working behind the scenes and we’ll be announcing some more details about our upcoming Let’s Play Youtube series soon too.  Until then hopefully you’re not quite done with your summer’s gaming backlog yet as the fall’s big releases won’t start popping out for another week or two.

Mayflash GC Controller Adapter for Wii/Wii U

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013

Gamecube-wii-adapter

Manufacturer: Mayflash
Current Retail Price: $17.99

As the cycle of game console succession continues through the years both systems and controllers/peripherals are usually replaced by demonstrably better iterations making the previous versions nostalgically obsolete. The transition from the GameCube to the Wii, though, with its sharp move from traditional controls to motion-based gaming left significantly more room for the continued use of the previous generation’s controllers/peripherals; to the point even of the inclusion of GameCube controller ports on the original version of the Wii. With the still new-ish Wii U continuing Nintendo’s tradition of backwards compatibility, it came as a disappointment to many that Nintendo didn’t offer any first-party solutions for using GameCube controllers (or the new Wii U Pro Controllers), particularly for games like Smash Bros. Brawl that still benefit greatly from their use. Mayflash has come to the more traditionalist Wii U gamers’ rescue with their “GC Controller Adapter for Wii/Wii U” that claims to allow you to use your trusty old GameCube controllers by fooling the Wiimote into thinking that it’s a Wii Classic Controller. Is the GC Controller Adapter for Wii/Wii U the adapter we’ve been waiting for since the Wii U’s release or does it leave you feeling a little detached? Read on to find out if our experience with it was plugged or bugged.

Anker 2.4G Wireless Vertical Mouse

Sunday, June 16th, 2013

anker-wireless-vertical-mouseManufacturer: Anker
Current Retail Price: $25.99

With the prevalence of computers in modern society, the kind of mouses and keyboards we use every day is becoming increasingly important.  Often times, especially if you use a computer to any moderate degree for school or work, you’re spending multiple hours every day interfacing with your computer, so the comfort of your peripherals, desk chair, or environment in general can make the difference between a pleasant and torturous day as well as the difference between health and chronic injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.  Anker is attempting to assuage some of the strain related to working with computers with their new vertical mouse.  While not a brand new idea, Anker’s vertical mice are more widely available than their predecessors, and most importantly less than half of the average price of their competitors at $25.99.  Was the Anker 2.4G Wireless Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse able to change our perspective on mouse alignment or did it leave us with a case of vertigo?  Read on to find out.

WiiU_SmashBros_scrnNew02_06_E3

Nintendo has a good showing with their Nintendo Direct@E3 2013 showcase this morning.  New details were given for many of their highest profile first and third party games and the new Smash Bros. was shown running on the Wii U and the 3DS along with three of the characters being introduced in the game: Mega Man, Villager from Animal Crossing, and the female Wii Fit Trainer (hopefully the only random choice this time around in a similar vein to ROB and Mr. Game & Watch).

The rest of the details released today were as follows:

E3 2013 Day #1 Summary

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Perhaps the most memorable E3 conference day of all time happened today.  We’ll have a handy list of what we learned about the Xbox One, PS4, and other various sundry future game products up soon, but for now the single biggest news of the day: PS4 will not have any of the hated game restrictions of the Xbox One and will retail for a full $100 less at $399.99.

With a 500 GB HDD, a faster architecture than the Xbox One, no forced (or initially included) camera peripheral, huge indie support, the ability to share/sell used games, the ability to play offline indefinitely, and all of the long-standing benefits of PlayStation Plus (except that it’s now required to play multiplayer online *shrug*) the PS4 well and truly blew the Xbox One out of the water today, even considering the fact that the excellent-looking Titanfall from ex-Infinity Ward studio Respawn Entertainment is exclusive to the Xbox One and PC.  Unless Microsoft seriously rethinks its life and does a complete 180 on its policies, we definitely know which console we’ll be buying first for the office.
