Splatoon is a really interesting game from Nintendo for many reasons. It’s Nintendo’s first competitive shooter since Metroid Prime: Hunters, one of their first big new IPs for the Wii U, and one of Nintendo’s first forays into the realm of ranked online matchmaking. Any new foray for any games company is bound to have a misstep here and there, so how does Splatoon compare to other modern competitive third person shooter offerings? Read on to find out how much of a splash Splatoon made on us in our first few hours with the game.

Nintendo Humble Bundle Live!
Tuesday, May 26th, 2015A surprising and excellent move from Nintendo today as they team up with Humble Bundle to allow gamers to pay what they want for a bunch of indie games for Wii U and 3DS. This is the first ever console-specific Humble Bundle and if Nintendo can do it we can probably expect to see bundles from Sony and Microsoft in the near future.
The charity this campaign is supporting is code.org that seeks to expand Computer Science education in both elementary and high schools around the world.
So, if you’d like some indie games for Nintendo systems on the cheap, or with the added bonus of donating to charity, you can pick up the bundle here.

Movie Review: Forbidden Empire (Viy)
Saturday, May 23rd, 2015The Hollywood of the modern era is well and truly obsessed with designing films by committee and targeting the lowest common denominator to cast as wide a net as possible over the wallets of the average consumers. While works with more integrity and vision sometimes slip through the cracks (the recently excellent Mad Max: Fury Road comes to mind), it is far more usual to end up with incoherent messes like Hot Pursuit. As Hollywood begins to crush itself under the weight of its hundreds of sequels, reboots and throwbacks, the movie industries in countries like India (Bollywood) and Russia (Rollywood?) have been steadily picking up the pace by increasingly often producing more risky and unique films than Hollywood has dared to in decades. Forbidden Empire (or Viy as it is called everywhere else including the film’s own title screen) was made by a largely Russian cast and crew and loosely based around a Ukrainian short story of the same name, so even though it features a couple of familiar faces like Jason Flemyng and Charles Dance, from the moment it starts you can tell it is not of the same ilk as your average Hollywood flick.
