My Favourite CoD: Black Ops II for Wii U

Thursday, September 3rd, 2015

call-of-duty-black-ops-ii

With Black Ops III due out in November and the public betas just recently finished, I was looking for something to scratch the Call of Duty itch I was left with.  Advanced Warfare‘s hype got me to buy in on day one for PC because I was looking for something more dynamic than Ghosts, but the gimmicks that permeate that game and inability to avoid the hoards of gamers that are much, much better than me left me far shy of the dozens of hours I normally invest in CoD multiplayer modes to begin with, so I didn’t really feel like going back there.  This led me down the path of CoD self discovery over the next couple of days bringing me to an interesting conclusion:  in spite of its shortcomings my favourite CoD since MW2 is Black Ops II for Wii U.

I was surprised to receive a review code via email a couple of weeks ago from Ty Taylor, the programmer and creator of The Bridge, an indie puzzle platformer that had intrigued me with its M.C. Escher-style levels and unique gameplay that seemed to take hints from the likes of Braid and echochrome.  As most gamers should know by now, though, the realm of indie gaming is a minefield where for every Bastion there are a bunch of games like Costal Defence.  So, does The Bridge rank among the indie gaming elite or does it fall by the wayside in spite of its impressive visuals?  Read on to see what we thought of our playthrough of The Bridge.

RIP Satoru Iwata

iwata-banana

It was announced today that Nintendo’s president since 2002, Satoru Iwata, passed away due to complications with a bile duct growth.

We’ll be the first to admit that Iwatasan didn’t always lead Nintendo in directions that we would have liked and largely continued his predecessor, Hiroshi Yamauchi’s Luddite anti-Internet and anti-groundbreaking graphical technology ways, but there is no doubt that Iwata took Nintendo from its GameCube slump back into the limelight with off the wall ideas like touchscreens and motion controls that forever changed how we all interact with personal electronics today.

It will be interesting to see where Nintendo goes now and what kind of person its fifth president will be, but the fact remains that Iwatasan is holding bananas in the sky now and he left a lasting legacy.

We Happy Few Kickstarter Live

WeHappyFew_PreAlpha

The first person roguelike from the Montreal studio that brought us the unique Contrast game now has its Kickstarter page up.  It’s in Canadian funds which is good for us Canucks and it’s comforting to know for once that you won’t have to pay extra for shipping just because you’re in the Great White North. 🙂

If you like the look of the game and pledge $60 or more you’ll get access to the pre-alpha version on Steam as soon as the Kickstarter finishes too (which is pretty sweet).  This is one of the more uniquely styled games to come out in a while, so here’s hoping that the gameplay will match!
