It’s been over three years since the release of the last Fight Night, which impressed, especially graphically, as an evolution of the king of boxing games. Although three years seems like a long enough time to dramatically improve the series, Fight Night Round 4, like so many EA sports games before it, mainly focuses on subtle game play tweaks; new controls, counter system and AI, so are these enough to make it worth your while? spiderman

Developer: Shaba Games/Treyarch
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Third-Person Action
Platform: Xbox 360 (reviewed), PC, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS, PSP
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)
Players: 1
Hours Played: 12
Game Progress: Finished single player

Spider-Man has always been my favorite super hero. The costume Peter Parker made is pretty cool, he is intelligent and has incredible strength. Spider-Man even gets to climb up walls and web-swing from buildings! Who doesn’t want to do that? Since no one actually can, video games are as close as we can get to becoming the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. There have been numerous games starring my favorite hero, and we all know they are not always the greatest games ever made. The thing that makes this game stand out from the rest is the mainly a unique story, the ability to change between the black and red suits, good web-swinging mechanics and a giant open world that is your playground. I’m sure you are thinking, “Boy, that sounds great Jack, is there actually anything wrong with this game, because it sounds fantastic?” Well yeah, there is usually something wrong with every game. Read on, dear reader, to find out if Spider-Man’s legacy lives or dies through this game.

Platform: Xbox 360, PS3, PC (reviewed on Xbox 360)
ESRB Rating: M (Mature)

The sequel to 2007?s successful horror-FPS F.E.A.R. has finally arrived in the form of F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin (formerly known simply as Project Origin), and little black-haired girls have never been scarier. Although not perfect, the first F.E.A.R. delivered highly intelligent AI (artificial intelligence) and intense FPS action wrapped in a horror-themed setting. Fans of the game will be happy to know that the sequel (which is really a prequel to the events of the first game) improves on almost all counts, read on however to find out if it is enough to propel it to the top of the crowded FPS genre.

WR: Street Fighter IV (PS3/Xbox 360/PC)

sfiv

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: 1-on-1 Fighter
Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC (reviewed on PS3)
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)
Players: 1-2 (2 online)
Hours Played: 30
Game Progress: Unlocked all characters, finished game on medium

Oh momma! Was I ever excited when Street Fighter IV was announced.  You see, I?m a big fan of the original Street Fighter II (hard core gamers will recall that the very first Street Fighter was a side-scrolling beat ?em up, not a 1-on-1 fighter) and one of its many evolutions, Super Street Fighter II. Over time it became difficult to keep up with the many new additions to the franchise, especially as the fighting mechanics became more hardcore and tailored to arcade rats. So when Street Fighter IV was first announced I was excited about the prospect of a game that goes back to its roots and becomes more accessible by stripping some of its baggage. Read on to find out if the legend is back, or if it gets a ?Shoryuken? straight to the bargain bin?

WR: Midnight Club Los Angeles (PS3/Xbox 360)

midnight-club-los-angeles

Developer: Rockstar San Diego
Publisher: Rockstar Games
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)
Players: 1 (1-16 online)
Hours Played: 25+

I?ve always been a big fan of the Midnight Club series, especially Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition on the Xbox and PS2, so when Midnight Club Los Angeles (MCLA), the franchise?s first title on a next generation console, was announced I couldn?t wait to get my hands on it. The final product is a fine looking game with attitude and tons of customization, but sadly lacks in its most important department: race mechanics.

Opinion: COD4 Vs. CODWAW It’s In The Numbers

codvscod

RESPONSE: COD4 Vs. CODWAW Vulnerable Humility

The main difference between these two games is apparent without even discussing their content.  The simple fact that not everyone knows is that these two games are made by entirely separate companies.  COD4 was made by Infinity Ward, the makers of the most award-winning entries in the series.  Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, and Call of Duty 4 are the sole productions of Infinity Ward.  That is seriously all they make — great COD games.  The first COD (Metacritic score: 91) won over 500 Game of the Year awards when it was released in 2003.  Call of Duty 4 (Metacritic score: 94) holds such titles as “#1 FPS of All Time” and “#1 Best-Selling FPS Ever” with over 11 million copies sold (compared to, say, 8.1 million for Halo 3).  Treyarch, overall, generally makes B-List games.  Recently, in addition to CODWAW (Metacritic score: 84), they’ve made the licensed Quantum of Solace (Metacritic score: 65), Spider-Man Web of Shadows (Metacritic score: 68), Spider-Man 3 (Metacritic score: 62), and Ultimate Spider-Man (Metacritic score: 75).  Treyarch has essentially never made a game on their own with a Metacritic score over 90.  That is all that Infinity Ward makes.  With that said, I’ll touch on the true differences between the games as well.
