Saturday, November 15th, 2008

It’s food time! It’s also time for your weekly dose of cute cuddly gaming news which comes in the form of Usagi Meta News. The highlights this week are:

Halo 3 Recon

Halo 3 Recon has a shorter single player campaign and price tag. The campaign is said to be around three to five hours and the price tag should be under $60. The Recon armor which is pretty well exclusive to Bungie staff members and a few select others will now be available when you purchase Recon, so be ready for everyone to look like you once Recon hits shelves.

Gears of War 2

Gears 2 has sold an incredible two million worldwide on its opening weekend. Not only were Gears of War 2 sales incredibly high but also the amount of people who were logged into Xbox Live on Gears of War 2?s opening weekend, 1.5 million users to be a little more exact. Were you really that shocked?

Console and Game sales:

Though Gears of War will come close to the top in game sales this month, Fable 2 (360) took its piece of cake and ate it too with almost 800,000 sold in October.  Wii Fit was choking on dust in 2nd place at about 487,000 sales and Fallout 3 taking 3rd with 375,000.

Console wise, the Wii is the little bunny that could.  Wii sales have gone up just over 100,000 since September when it sold 687,000 units. Last month the PS3 sold 190,000 units, 360 with 371,000 units and PSP with 193,000 units, combined they could not overcome the tiny console; it appears size doesn?t matter.

Since we are on the topic of sales, Ubisoft?s Far Cry 2 has sold one million copies Worldwide over three weeks. Looks like Fallout 3 isn?t on everyone?s mind for open world gameplay.

Blizzard?s new MMO:

World of Warcraft?s developer Blizzard has announced they are working on a ?next generation? MMO. I?m curious to see if this means they could be working on an entirely new IP, because it sounds like they are moving away from producing another Warcraft title. Check out the interview between Blizzard COO Paul Sams and VG247 for the full story.

WR: Star Wars The Force Unleashed (PS3/360/Wii)

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Developer: LucasArts
Publisher: LucasArts
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)
Players: 1
Hours played: 20
Game progress: Finished game on Sith (Medium) difficulty level

Star Wars is a fickle mistress.  She makes you feel loved and good about yourself with movies like Episodes IV – VI and then when you think the wonderful relationship is over, wait! There’s hope with Episodes I – III, but promises of more prove just to be further evidence that the relationship is tired and done. It’s not that different in the game world, there are signs, mere hints that the relationship could be great with games like Rogue Squadron (next-gen follow up, please!), Knights of the Old Republic and yes, OK maybe even Lego Star Wars. But then there’s so much heart ache with the multitude of bad games that make you wonder what you’re still in it for. Well, which of the two categories does Force Unleashed fall into?  Surprisingly, a bit of both.

WR: Battlefield Bad Company (PS3/360)

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Developer: DICE
Publisher: EA
ESRB Rating: T (Teen)
Players: 1-24
Hours Played: 20
Progress: Completed the game

The Battlefield franchise is well known to PC gamers, as it has a solid reputation amongst massive-multi-player shooters. Although not new to console gaming, the series has taken an abrupt turn to a story driven, single player game (don?t worry there is still a considerable multi-player component) with the arrival of Battlefield: Bad Company.

Warren Review: Soul Calibur 4 (PS3/360)

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Developer/Publisher: Namco
ESRB Rating: M (Mature)
Players: 1-4

Hours Played: 12
Progress:  Completed Story Mode with all characters

I still remember the original Soul Edge as one of the defining 3D fighters on the PS1. That generation spawned many great fighting games but the forerunner to what would eventually be the Soul Calibur series already set itself apart with solid fight mechanics, good graphics and weapons based combat.

Many fighting game fans have been looking forward to the next Soul Calibur addition to the series for the new generation of consoles. While the weapons based combat is still a staple of the franchise, its solid graphics, character design and innovation have won new fans over the years. The game?s innovation has come from a variety of different directions; Soul Calibur has featured an adventure-style story mode, a create-a-fighter mode and special guest characters. It is especially the latter which has garnered the series some hype and interest.

Warren Review: Too Human (360)

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Hours Played: 12.5
Progress: Level 28, Main story completed, vast majority of side-quests completed (yeah, I know.)

This long-awaited game from Silicon Knights (who are Canadian, woo!), the makers of Eternal Darkness on the GameCube, is finally out.  With a unique combat system and a story based on what can only be described as cyber-Norse mythology, does this game really live up to the incredible hype that has been surrounding it for years?

Warren Review: Rock Band (PS3)

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Hours Played: over 50
Progress: Completed “Endless Setlist” (gained Legendary status!)

Rock Band is the first music simulation game to encompass a full band. It allows players to play drums, guitar, bass, and sing. This is the first time drumming has come to a console (at least a full drum set unlike Taiko Drum Master or Donkey Konga). Singing is much like Sing Star and the guitar/bass is much like Guitar Hero.

Microsoft Conference Hall E3 2008

So, the most wonderful time of the year for gamers has arrived and Microsoft was given the duty of kicking off this year’s festivities with their press conference this year.  In my opinion, last year Microsoft “won” E3 in a big way with their press conference, even though I’m always rooting for Nintendo deep down.  Hopefully Nintendo has something insanely huge up their sleeves, because Microsoft again had a pretty good showing this year.  Read on for the highlights.
