Nintendo E3 2008 Review

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Well, Nintendo’s had their kick at the E3 cat.  How many of my predictions came true?  Did Nintendo give me an early Christmas present by addressing any of my Pipe Dreams?  Once again in the Kodak theatre, Nintendo had a huge venue from which they could unravel their magic upon a very ready and very large crowd of the press.  Read on to find out whether they used their powers, or just left us by the wayside while they went off on a gaming tangent again.

This is Wish Bear

Well, E3 is once again upon us, and Microsoft had a pretty good showing today, so tomorrow morning it will be up to both Nintendo and Sony to strut their respective stuffs.  Thus, it is as good a time as any to make some predictions before everything starts happening tomorrow.  There have been very few rumours floating around before this E3, which is quite unusual.  This could either mean that big things are afoot, or that nothing much will be happening at all.  GoNintendo says that Iwatadono will be making an appearance this year, and that usually spells that something big is in the cards.  Here are my predictions/hopes split into two categories: Predictions and Pipe Dreams.

Microsoft Conference Hall E3 2008

So, the most wonderful time of the year for gamers has arrived and Microsoft was given the duty of kicking off this year’s festivities with their press conference this year.  In my opinion, last year Microsoft “won” E3 in a big way with their press conference, even though I’m always rooting for Nintendo deep down.  Hopefully Nintendo has something insanely huge up their sleeves, because Microsoft again had a pretty good showing this year.  Read on for the highlights.

WALL-E and EVE

There comes a time in every critic’s life when they come across something that is beyond their cynicism and critique.  Somewhere along the line, something will present itself to them at is beyond all reprehension and is simply beautiful in every possible way.  WALL-E instantly hit #1 in the box-offices, has been given perfect scores by essentially all notable critics, and has a ratings average of 9.2 on imdb and a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Is it really worth all of the hype that has been afforded it?

The World Ends With You

Time played: approx. 18 hours
Progress: completed game (1 time), player level 49, ESP’er Rank C

The World Ends with You is an action-RPG for the Nintendo DS. It was developed by Jupiter (a subsidiary of Square Enix) who was also responsible for the game Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.  The World Ends with You?s pedigree and ancestors have set a pretty high set of standards for new Square Enix games not of the Final Fantasy lineage.  But does this new game meets up to these standards?

Logitech Cordless MediaBoard for PS3

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Cost: $54 (most places; I found mine for $34)
Interface: Wireless via USB
Platform: Playstation 3 (Works on PC, Mac and Wii (no trackpad on Wii))

The Logitech Cordless MediaBoard for Playstation 3 is an all-in-one Keyboard and Mouse. It says that it is for Playstation 3, but I have tested it on a PC and it worked perfectly without any driver installation. To be more specific, I built a new system and used it to setup my BIOS settings for the first time, then to install the operating system.

Angora Usagi

The Game Usagi team has been busy behind the scenes prepping some new things for our readers over the summer.  Here’s some of what we have planned:

  • The Usagi-cast —  more game news and reviews plus our opinions on such.  In addition to the usual gaming podcast banter, we’ll be doing something super-special, so watch out for it!
  • Warren Reviews — reviews that go as deep as a warren into the essential nature of the game due to the fact that it was entirely completed before the review was written.  This gives you a definitive look at the nuances of a game that can be missed in preliminary reviews.
  • Proper forums — our current forums have been having issues along with our current sidebar.  We’re going to revamp the entire thing and start fresh with a new forum software to see if we can’t get them working even more smoothly.
