April Fools’! — Welcome the Unagi

Hey, ya’ll. Just a little rebranding going on here at Game Unagi due to our recent takeover by Unagicorp, Ltd. from Japan. We’ll still be providing the same quality reviews and otaku opinions as always, just under a new banner and with better funding. It’s been fun so far and thanks for sticking with us during this time of change. Our URLs and the like will be fully switched over in a couple of days, but we’ll let you know when to change your bookmarks ahead of time.

For those wondering, unagi is the Japanese word for freshwater eel.

Usagi Revisited [update]

As you may notice, we have undergone some cosmetic changes as of late.  We’re proud to announce that Game Usagi is now 100% flash-free making it more friendly for iPad and Nintendo DS browsers and also loading 15% more quickly.

Our Twitter feed is now also Javascript-powered, again making it both faster and more usable.

Perhaps the most drastic change we’ve made is to Usagi Comix which now sports a whole-new design, you can check it out by clicking the image below:

First Look: Nintendo 3DS [update 2]

Just a wireframe of the DS lite, not the 3DS

Nintendo officially announced today that they have a brand-new successor for the DS line in the works for release within the next financial year, the Nintendo 3DS.  The lid will be blown off of the system at this year’s E3 on June 15th, so until then we just have a couple of facts that Nintendo has officially shared and some conjecture based on their unofficial statements and those of developers that are apparently already using the new system’s dev kits.  A shortlist of 3DS facts and conjecture can be seen after the jump.

WR: Heavy Rain (PS3)

Progress: Completed all chapters and successfully finished game

People familiar with French developer Quantic Dream’s Xbox and PS2 title: Indigo Prophecy, will have a good idea of what to expect from their latest release and PS3 exclusive, Heavy Rain. For everyone else, this title is best described as an interactive movie, combining gameplay elements from adventure games, PC point-and-click titles and even The Sims. The story, which is the focal point of the game, is incredibly engrossing and makes this title, with its thriller-esque plot, one of the more sophisticated experiences available on consoles today. It’s not for everyone however and has some nagging gameplay issues that dilute the experience, so read on to find out what it all comes down to in the end…

First Look: Playstation Move

Well, Sony’s PS3-mote has finally been revealed and it is even more of a Wii-clone set-up than originally thought.  In addition to the Playstation Move controller proper, there is also something called the “sub-controller” that functions as a wireless nunchuck with no motion-sensing abilities.  Initial reports from news sources present at this year’s GDC are generally quite positive, as the added accuracy from the Playstation Eye camera fells to most like it delivers on the promises made by Nintendo so long ago that were never lived up to with the occasionally flaky Wiimote control.  The price tag has yet to officially be set for the Move, but a North American launch window of “Fall 2010” was announced.  I, for one, am looking forward to this control scheme’s use in Resident Evil 5, as RE4 with Wii controls was definitely the best of the series thus far.  We’ll keep you posted as new media and info arrives.  A couple of screenshot galleries can be seen after the jump…

The first Mass Effect came out on Xbox 360 at the end of 2007, it was something different back then: a Sci-Fi RPG with an over-the-shoulder, 3rd-person perspective and gun-based combat. Now an iconic BioWare title, it was one of my favorite RPGs and with the sequel finally here, expectations are high. When we spoke with the QA Lead on the Mass Effect 2 team back in October at PAX ’09 (Penny Aracde Expo) it was obvious the development team was passionate about correcting some of the shortcomings of the first game. This passion is apparent from the moment you fire up the game, almost everything has been improved over the previous title, already marking Mass Effect 2 as one of the best games of 2010, read on the find out why…
