GeoWars3

Developer: Lucid Games
Publisher: Sierra Entertainment
Genre: Shooter
Players: 1-4
Console: PC (reviewed), Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4
Hours Played: ~5.5 hours
Progress: Completed about 40% of the Single Player and Co-Op Adventure modes.  Played a smattering of Arcade and the other sundry modes.

It’s been six years since the official second entry in the Geometry Wars series and an unfortunate three since the series’ original developer, Bizarre Creations, was dissolved by Activision. Lucid Games was luckily formed out of some of the more essential pieces of Bizarre Creations after it was blown out of the water, but as their own entity they are relatively untested having only developed a few more simple iOS-centric games since their formation. Was Lucid Games up to the task of making a brand new main-series Geometry Wars? Read on to find out if Geometry Wars 3 parallels the greatness of its predecessors.

p3210

Manufacturer: GamesterGear
Current Retail Price: $109.99 US

These days you can’t toss an SD card in an electronics store without hitting seven or eight gaming headsets of varying prices and quality. Whether they claim to have virtual surround sound, true surround sound, or enough bass to permanently damage the hearing of three generations of your ancestors, they all have a gimmick or two between their earpads. One particular feature missing from our expansive collection of gaming headsets has been really powerful bass, so we were very interested to test out GamesterGear’s P3210s when they showed up on our doorstep. Spouting “Bass Quake” technology that is meant to let you “physically experience audio while gaming” and “feel vibrations or changes in the environment”, the P3210 headset sounded like it would perfectly fill the heavy bass void that was existing in our gaming lives. Did the P3210s rock our world? Read on to find out.

Sony E3 2014 Conference Summary

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

sony-e3-2014

Sony, with their usual advantage of going second and knowing precisely what Microsoft had to offer, once again blew Microsoft clean out of the water.  At a break-neck pace for about 85% of the presentation’s rather lengthy 2 hours, Sony kept the big announcements and exciting game demonstrations coming.  Among my favourite news was the Destiny alpha happening this weekend exclusively on the PS4 that can be applied for here by entering your PSN ID, the PS Vita TV launching in North America for $99 this fall, Playstation Now entering public beta on July 31st, an exclusive HD remake of Grim Fandango, the ability to play Far Cry 4 multiplayer on PS3/PS4 even with friends who don’t own the game and the preview shown of the upcoming theatrical Ratchet & Clank movie.  Sony definitely brought the thunder this year and is poised to “win” E3 in the eyes of people who are discounting Nintendo’s E3 presence due to their pre-recorded presentation airing at 9:30am today.  Nintendo could still blow everyone out of the water with their guaranteed Zelda Wii U announcement coupled by some much-anticipated final character information for the swiftly approaching Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U games, but time will tell if that’s enough for them to knock Sony off of their very high perch.  See after the jump for the official Sony PR summary of their many announcements and showcases.

FPS Freek Phantom for PS4

Friday, February 14th, 2014

phantom
Anybody who plays competitive FPS games for long enough will start looking for ways to get the edge up on their competition. Whether it’s tweaking the in-game settings for hours, trying to optimize an Internet connection, looking up strategies online or physically modifying controllers the end-goal is the same — upping your score just a bit so you feel less depressed about being beaten so handily by kids with faster reflexes than you.  Kontrol Freek is the foremost company that caters to gamers looking for that extra edge with non-permanent controller modifications like skins and control stick extensions.  Does their latest offering for the PS4 deliver on all fronts, or does it barely hold the line? Find out just how freek-y we found our time with the Phantoms after the jump.

PS Vita News? (Surprise!)

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

ps-vita-tvSony surprised everyone today with a couple of potentially game-changing announcements for the struggling (if not completely dead) PS Vita.  Firstly, a tiny (6cm by 10cm) brand-new product is hitting Japanese stores on Nov. 14th for the equivalent of $100 US called the PS Vita TV (pictured above).  This contraption combines the Netflix/Hulu/etc. streaming features of an Apple TV/Roku/WDTV/etc. box with the ability to play PS Vita games straight from the card and access the PlayStation Store.  It can be used as a way to stream your PS4 games to a separate TV elsewhere in the house, as a way to stream your PS Vita games to your PS4, or as a way to play your PlayStation Store-available PSOne and PSP games via the TV.  At launch it will support the use of a PS3 controller to control said games (limiting the PS Vita selection to only those entirely controllable via button input (not requiring touch screen/camera interactions)), but support for the PS4 controller and thereby PS4 game streaming will be available through a patch at a later date.  There is no word yet on whether the touch functionality of the PS4 controller will be used to enhance the playable game selection of the PS Vita TV or not.

Release Dates and More

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

n2ds_blue_03_610x574

No, what you’re looking at above is not a bad Photoshop.  Look at a calendar, it’s not April 1st either.  Nintendo today really, honestly announced the Nintendo 2DS — a $130 version of the 3DS with original 3DS-sized screens that sports most 3DS features with the exception of 3D and closing capabilities.  So, while it’s no longer really pocket-sized, Nintendo is aiming squarely at the smaller children crowd with their latest 3DS iteration, but if the Internet is to be believed this random and surprising console will likely go the way of the GBA micro and Wii mini to rest in the halls of Nintendo’s more ill-advised console refreshes.  If you happen to want one for some reason they hit stores on Oct. 12th in North America.

In other news, the PlayStation 4 that is looking better every day received the honour of a release date (but not a release game line-up list unfortunately).  The PS4 will officially hit NA stores on November 15th for $399.99, we’ll let you know should any more info arise regarding what games will be available at that time.

The Wii U had some news today as well.  Firstly, a price-cut bringing it down to $299.99 for the Deluxe model starting on Sept. 20th.  Some details about Wind Waker HD were also released including a limited edition Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle (comes with a digital copy of Hyrule Historia and an eShop code for Wind Waker) launching Sept. 20th also priced at $299.99 and the disc version of Wind Waker HD will be available in stores for $49.99 starting Oct. 4th.  A special edition of the disc version of Wind Waker HD will also be available exlusively at GameStop/EB Games that includes an impressive Ganondorf figurine for a mere $5 extra at $54.99.

Finally, updates have been sparse lately and we apologize for that.  Rest assured we’re busy working behind the scenes and we’ll be announcing some more details about our upcoming Let’s Play Youtube series soon too.  Until then hopefully you’re not quite done with your summer’s gaming backlog yet as the fall’s big releases won’t start popping out for another week or two.

E3 2013 Day #1 Summary

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Perhaps the most memorable E3 conference day of all time happened today.  We’ll have a handy list of what we learned about the Xbox One, PS4, and other various sundry future game products up soon, but for now the single biggest news of the day: PS4 will not have any of the hated game restrictions of the Xbox One and will retail for a full $100 less at $399.99.

With a 500 GB HDD, a faster architecture than the Xbox One, no forced (or initially included) camera peripheral, huge indie support, the ability to share/sell used games, the ability to play offline indefinitely, and all of the long-standing benefits of PlayStation Plus (except that it’s now required to play multiplayer online *shrug*) the PS4 well and truly blew the Xbox One out of the water today, even considering the fact that the excellent-looking Titanfall from ex-Infinity Ward studio Respawn Entertainment is exclusive to the Xbox One and PC.  Unless Microsoft seriously rethinks its life and does a complete 180 on its policies, we definitely know which console we’ll be buying first for the office.
