3DS vs. PS Vita — Economics vs. Ergonomics?

Monday, March 5th, 2012

With both Sony and Nintendo’s new systems out of the gate and well on their way, it’s a good time to step-back and take a look at where both of the systems stand. Being a proud owner of both of these new(ish) portable systems, and having lugged them both around everywhere like needy children, I’m in a good position to offer some keen insights into the practical gaming applications of each system. We’ll split this bout up into several categories so we can explore the key areas in which these systems excel or ex-…smell. Read on to see how they measure up to one another and their predecessors.

Project Café/Wii 2/Wii HD/Stream Mockups [update]

Project Cafe Logo

Nintendo Project Cafe

[update:  Café seemingly confirmed as the working title for Nintendo’s next console as evidenced by the above Wario-laden banner from Nintendo’s support site for developers: warioworld.com]

Current mock-up count: 167

While there are some other very good mock-up archives for Nintendo’s next home console, we found that they weren’t updated often or in a thorough enough manner to satisfy our excitement for the system.  Since 4cr isn’t compiling one of their famous mockup archives this time ’round, we took it upon ourselves to build upon what’s already out there and try to make this the most comprehensive compilation of Project Café mockups available.

The first 47 of these can be attributed to David Turnbull (of Nintendo3DSBlog.com fame) and his mock-up archive that you should certainly check out and the rest are ones we have found and added ourselves.  Enjoy!

If you have any mock-ups of your own creation or ones you have found but aren’t in our list, please feel free to link to them in our comments sections or submit them to: tips@gameusagi.com

usagi-3ds

It’s been 24 hours (give or take) since we first got our hands on the 3DS and with a whole day’s worth of experience under my belt, I thought I’d give you the benefit of this experience and give you some info on some nuances of 3DS ownership that are not always addressed in similar guides.

Indie Game Hopeless 2 Beta Nearing Full Release

hopeless2

This is a guest post from one of Game Usagi’s supporters.

Necromanthus, an independent gaming design company out of Romania, took the idea of a browser-based first-person shooter to new heights in 2008 with their release of Stryke Mercenary Camp. Stryke wasn?t the only free-to-join browser-based FPS on the market, not by a long shot, but it was the only shooter on the entire market to be highly optimized for basic computers and basic Internet connections.

Many popular shooters, like Country Strike, Orange and others, not only require gamers to have a hefty gaming rig capable of high FPS (Frames Per Second) rates, but they also require gamers to have low ping values (around 80ms on the high end) and superb connection quality. Stryke didn?t. Anyone could play and school noobs, whether they had a top-of-the-line PC or a low-powered laptop.

3DS Manual Image Captions

Friday, February 25th, 2011

As with any Nintendo system manual, the 3DS’ manual is chock-full of amusingly vague pictures just ripe for the captioning.  We picked out the top 18 pictures from the manual and have embellished them to show what the pictures really mean.  Have your own captions?  Share them in the comments section!  See the rest after the jump:

3DS Graphics: What We Know [update]

Monday, June 21st, 2010

[update: The 3DS’ graphics chip was officially unveiled today and it is called the DMP PICA200. The tech demo video for this graphics chip has been added to the article]

So, this year’s E3 has come and gone and we have managed to glean quite a few details about all manner of aspects of the upcoming 3DS system from Nintendo.  One of the most impressive and unfortunately obscured aspects of the 3DS are its graphical powers.  Pretty much all Nintendo showed to us at home was the trailer for Kid Icarus, which while awesome did not do too much to diversify our knowledge of everything the system can do.  So, I have accumulated for you all of the currently available samples of 3DS graphics available in both photo and video form so that you can perhaps be just as excited as we are at Game Usagi.  All of the awesomeness after the jump starting with the videos.

3DS Dev-Build Hardware Analysis

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

There has been an image floating about the internet over the last couple of days, supposedly leaked through an FCC filing, of the development kit motherboard currently being used to test 3DS games.  It’s not of a terribly high resolution, so I enlarged it a bit and examined it in detail to see just what we can learn about the 3DS from this image if it turns out to be the real deal.
