The Tony Hawk Pro Skater (THPS) series has a long and sordid history.  Entries in the THPS series have earned everywhere from a 98 to a 44 average score on Metacritic, and it’s no secret to anyone that their scores have been steadily trending downwards over the years.  Taking elements including levels, music, and move-sets from the first two great entries in the THPS series and mixing in modern graphics and music as well, you’d think that an HD “best of” collection would hearken back to the series’ hey-day and remind us all why we fell in love with it in the first place.  Wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t you?!?!? Read on to see where the downloadable THPS HD belongs in the wide spectrum of Tony Hawk game scores.

Point Review: Joy Ride Turbo (Xbox 360)

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Developer: BigPark
Publisher:
Microsoft Game Studio
Genre: Racing
Players: 1-4 (2-8 online)
Console: Xbox 360 (XBLA)
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Hours Played: 7+
Progress: Placed first in all 100 HP and 200 HP races, had my butt beaten in 300 HP and online, found a little over half of the collectibles in Stunt mode.

Originally announced as a free XBLA title at E3 2009, Joy Ride was retro-fitted with Kinect controls to serve as a full-retail launch title for the Kinect in late 2010.  After lacklustre reviews (and probably lacklustre sales), largely surrounding the controls in Kinect Joy Ride, Microsoft gave the game another year or so worth of development and came up with the non-Kinect sequel Joy Ride Turbo.  Do new modes and controller-based controls bring new life to Joy Ride, or is Microsoft just metaphorically beating a dead IP?  Read on to see what we thought.

First announced in 2007, Fez was immediately surrounded by a cloud of anticipation.  Several delays in the game’s release had some people believing that it would end up being vaporware even though its gameplay looked so enticing.  The gaming community was very happy to welcome Fez with open arms upon its release this month, but are the charming 8-bit-style graphics and novel perspective-shifting gameplay worth the 5 year wait or did this game fall as flat as its 2D characters?  Read on to see what we thought of Fez.

thatgamecompany, renowned for their previous two games flOw and Flower, recently launched their third and arguably largest game Flo- … Journey.  Both flOw and Flower were great games in their own rights, but they strayed too far from traditional gaming paradigms for many gamers.  With an engaging art-style and promise of more depth than their previous offerings, Journey could very well be their best game yet.
